Artist Statement
Ive happily lived and worked in a couple of dozen cities across America Europe and Africa gathering skills and techniques and exploring local histories. I enjoy the traveller's feeling of being out of time and place an observer of the unfamiliar when even the ordinary world seems magical. Each of my shadowboxes is a theatrical scene a thin slice of a world; the story is never about the birds but they are your guides into my imaginary world. The Aviaries are one-of-a-kind or limited edition dioramas which I construct from wood brass paper glass antique hardware and many other materials. Backgrounds are sometimes paper ephemera collected in my travels otherwise theyre hand-painted in ink acrylic or watercolor. The birds I cast in resin using molds made from my original carvings then I individually refine and paint them. I carefully consider color pose and placement of birds as the final step in construction.
