Artist Statement
Polymer infused paper and hand-woven chain in alternative metals are the foundation for my jewelry constructions. My introduction to paper as a substrate for jewelry making came through experimentation with Origami folding. Dissatisfied with the weight and strength of traditional origami papers I experimented with watercolor paper which was heavier and stronger. Realizing the paper could behave like sheet metal I was intrigued and ended up abandoned Origami folding altogether in favor of creating less geometric more sculptural forms. In my current body of work I focus on scroll petal and fan shapes but the range of possibilities is always expanding. Patterning is primarily derived from my collage and digital art but also incorporates what I call found patterns.” Paper elements are polymer infused for a waterproof fade resistant enamel-like finish. For the chain work links bails and backing petals I use aluminum and/or titanium for their light weight.”
