Book Binding is the most fulfilling medium I have worked with. Keeping the object functional presents a very satisfying challenge for me. I love the scope of Book Binding as a medium because you can use any material, you can translate the form so many different ways, there is still so much room to innovate in a form that already has such a rich history. The process for my books involves choosing materials first, it seems appropriate to start with the tactile response on such a personal functional item. Then I respond to those materials and design the form for the book, choosing the particular binding method, and the size for the book. Most of my books are sewn with a long stitch, one of my favorite bindings to deconstruct and reinvent with my own designs. It is a very fulfilling medium for me for many reasons. Because of the functionality of my final pieces, I know that they will continue to change as an object and to be part of the users life in a way that other artwork is not.
