Artist Statement
Where do we find happiness? We search for it we pursue it trying to find it when all the time it is just there it comes when you stop expecting it stopped hoping not afraid Ella Richards 2010 I call my art scissors drawings because there are two skills that go into my art drawing and cutting. My tools are simple a drawing a sheet of vellum a sheet of black paper a scissors a glue pen and a sheet of watercolor paper. Scissors Drawings evolved from my lifelong dedication to watercolors. I realized that cutting my drawings out of a sheet of black paper allowed me the simplicity I sought; it allowed me to focus on the line and emotion of the piece. While my art draws on the traditions of paper cutting I want to challenge the medium to create paintings out of a sheet of black paper. My sources for subjects come from my life in the USSR and my current life in Greenwich Village NYC. I wrote the poem to tell what I wanted to communicate with my art.
