Artist Statement
I am a research microscopist/instructor specializing in polarized light microscopy and photomicrography. In plain English this means I look at stuff under the microscope show people how to look at stuff under the microscope and take pictures of stuff under the microscope. Each piece of art is a photograph (well technically a photomicrograph) of a particular chemical or substance under the microscope taken with a microscope-dedicated camera. The colors and patterns are naturally occurring. They are NOT the result of Photoshop or any other image-editing software. After an image is taken the only image editing that is performed is some contrast enhancement and a bit of sharpening to make the image appear as close to what it looks like under the microscope as possible. Most of these chemicals were prepared for photomicrography by heating them until they melted and then allowing them to cool and recrystallize forming the particular patterns seen here.
