Artist Statement
Jana creates her photographic images using natural & available light to capture architecture & nature. She uses Black & White Film & prints each piece by hand on a fiber base matte surface paper in her own darkroom using traditional darkroom techniques. Once her images are washed & dried she adds color by individually painting each piece by hand with colored pencils. She first applies a unique liquid solution to the emulsion of the photographic paper on only the areas she wants to add color. The liquid softens the lead of the pencil allowing her to blend the colored pencils into the emulsion of the paper. This effect is perfected by using Q-tips to blend the softened pencil imprint into the image. Next she frames her images with salvaged antique tin ceiling tiles & old wood molding from homes. Each piece of salvaged material is enhanced & hand-picked specifically for every image creating a perfect marriage between piece & frame. The result is a one-of-a kind original work of art.
