Artist Statement
My body of work entitled Painted Desert Series is inspired by the beauty of the landscape of the west. The series explores texturing and mixing of porcelain clay in its pure form with colorants and stains to achieve a marbling or agate stone effect. All pieces are high-fired and either unglazed showing the beauty of the clay itself or partially glazed to compliment the natural clay surface. The inside is glazed to allow functionality and provide contrast. Each piece that emerges from the kiln is a surprise not unlike the surprises in our lives. Neither can be predicted nor relied upon. We need to appreciate when a piece or an event turns out just as we wanted and to adapt when it does not. In those situations where there is disappointment there is not failure because in every experience there is a measure of success to be found. All pieces have been wheel thrown and altered. The grolleg porcelain clay body has been high fired to Cone 10.
