Artist Statement
I work with acrylic paint on canvas. My ideas are visual recreations of experiences I’ve had or things I’ve noticed. Each painting is a story within a story. I begin by sketching the main images upside down, with my non-dominant hand. This results in the uncontrolled line and naive effect I desire. More recently, I’ve been recreating my initial sketch on the canvas by applying the paint using a monotype transfer technique. I love the texture and chance this brings to each piece.
In the background, I tell a story about the main image, not limiting myself by over-thinking. Using a sgraffito technique, I fill the space with tiny sketches, figures and dialogue, exposing the underpainting. Some detail is rendered in pencil over the top layer of paint. Sophisticated naivety.
