Artist Statement
Exhibited at many high-end juried craft shows including Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art Affiliates Show Chicago Craft at Lincoln Center Shows N.Y.C. and others. Her sophisticated 2014 collection titled Flyover Abstracts” takes her work in a compelling new direction. Each convex or flat oval bead is in effect a tiny and elegant veneered painting. The subject matter recalls the experience of flying over stunning geometric fields of forest farmlands flowers and waterways. Her unique work explores the confluence of abstract art and polymer clay techniques set off with semi-precious beads. Each bead's veneer is the result of a complicated artistic process that relies on refined techniques and myriad steps–clay conditioning color-mixing slicing and rolling layering and multiples firings. Laura achieves her silky surface by hand-sanding each disk with up to 6 increasingly refined grades of sandpaper–with stunning results!”
