Artist Statement
I work with clay either porcelain stoneware or a combination of the two. I explore the forms and finished surfaces of the imaginary face and figure. My pieces are constructed through the manipulation of slabs wheel thrown forms or solid masses. Additive subtractive and clay stretching methods are employed. My finished surfaces are burnished textured glazed or an amalgam of these techniques. My textures are usually derived from found items and reflect patterns in nature. My glazes are soft and stony or buttery. They are hand mixed. I use them to create intricate patterns or representational imagery on the surfaces. The face becomes a canvas. These pieces are suggestive sensual and hopefully inspiring. They are not race or culture specific. They are composites of real and dreamed people. Pushed shaped fired for life in a vitrified world. The work is a response to the inputs both conscious and other I have received from life.
