Artist Statement
I gather molten glass from my furnace on the end of a blowpipe. I put a small bubble in it. I apply all the color on the small bubble. I layer and blend the color by rolling the bubble in pie pans of fitted colored glass. I apply and manipulate another colored bit to create swirling abstract expressive motifs. On some of the pieces I gather more clear glass over the color. I blow and shape the bottom of the piece using gravity; centrifugal force and my jacks. The jacks are 18 inch flexible steel blades that I press against the piece as I turn it on a bench. After I flatten the foot, I transfer the glass to a steel panty rod; It is a solid five foot rod with a bit of glass on the end. I crack the piece off at the neck and am then able to work the top of the piece. Using the jacks and pinchers, I complete the body of the piece. I then apply bits and handles. After the piece is complete I anneal the work by cooling it slowly in a special oven overnight.
