My work is initially focused on exploring color planes. I am inspired by the color field painters of the 1940s and 50s such as Richard Diebenkorn and Hans Hofman. The focus on a picture frame with unbroken color fields emphasizes strong form pattern and structure. Barns are a recurring theme. I see barns first for their color and form; second for their iconic representation. In fact their iconic stature both informs and is informed by my treatment of them. The work of Andreas Gursky and Bernd and Hilla Becher is a strong influence. I work in several mediums: large-scale photography spliced digitally; and casein oil and encaustic on hardwood panels. I also cre I find the juxtaposition of these mediums the contemporary with the ancient helps to build connections in the imagery. Barns are fast disappearing from the American landscape. Their iconic status is embedded within the identity of America.
