I started turning in high school in shop class in 2003 and immediately fell in love with it. My family has a long history in the lumber business so I already had sawdust running through my veins by working summers and weekends for my father making custom millwok products. The one tool we did not have or a variation of that the high school shop had was a lathe; I think that is what attracted me to try it. It was something new my father with his many years of experience had never even worked on a lathe. I started making canes and bats and worked my way into small bowls and eventually into large fruit bowls. It was not until my senior year of high school that I started to make segmented turnings. I worked for approximately a month at the rate of about one hour a day to end up having it shatter on the lathe into many more pieces than I had first glued together.
