BODY OF WORK = MORE JURY POINTS & MORE SALES
Artists can earn easy jury points on their art show applications by having a strong body of work!
But What is a Body of Work?
Body of Work is how well your images fit together and represent a distinctive theme and style/vision of the artist. The four jury images should be cohesive and give the jury a strong clear understanding of what the artist plans to show at the festival.
In the following example, you can see that each piece of art relates to each other in theme and style and also, color palette. You can easily tell that all of these pieces were composed by the same artist.
Artwork by Pavlina Alea
The following group of images is a great example of a body of work for a jeweler who creates necklaces and earrings. Often, jewelers don’t only create necklaces or only earrings but have a mixture. If that’s the case, choose 2 earrings and 2 necklaces that relate in style. In the example below, there’s similarity in the design of the pieces in the stones used and the gold wrap on the stones.
Why is Body of Work Important?
- When artists represent a body of work, it elevates all the pieces and in turn reinforces higher prices.
- Too much work that doesn’t relate to each other comes across as buy/sell. Buy/sell is when someone buys something and then turns around and sells it. Buy/sell vendors are not allowed in our art festivals.
- Too many things in a single 10×10 space starts to look like a flea market and does not support higher price points. Think about thrift stores with many things on display versus a high-end store with select items on display.
- Too many things cause customer confusion and customers will lose focus. Confused customers will NOT buy.
