Artist Statement
In working with wood to create pieces that people want to use I try to bring out the natural beauty of the color & grain of wood. Each species has its own unique color visual texture & pattern. By combining individual pieces of various species in patterns I create an appealing design making the pieces both attractive & very usable in function and form. I choose to use native woods in my work both because I want to showcase what can be done with our own local trees & as an expression of taking responsibility for the materials that go into my work & where they came from & what impact they had. Whenever possible I use wood that I have gathered & processed myself. Each piece is created with the goal of minimal waste in mind in order to minimize the negative impact of my work on our world. The most enjoyable portion of making the wooden kitchen items is finishing them with oil. As the oil is wiped on the wood takes on depth the color becomes vibrant & the pattern pops out.
