Artist Statement
The transformation process that occurs between the cold ball of clay and the ware removed from the kiln fascinates me the ever-evolving possibilities of form color and texture. My personal journey with clay explores the traditional methods of hand building and throwing. Slab construction techniques especially intrigue me as this fabrication process allows a piece to emerge from a flat sheet of clay. Many of my slab pots display gentle swells where I have pushed and stretched the clay to contrast the flat planes. I frequently work in a series of eight or nine pieces advancing the design and form within each creation. As I progress through the series a specific feature will capture my attention and hence inspire a new pathway. Two constants are apparent within my work a serene elegance of form and a focus on nature as a design element. I receive inspiration from and pay homage to the potters of the past especially commercially employed art potters of the early 20th century.
