How would you describe your work?

My work is a testament to a bold and contemporary artistic expression that draws inspiration from a diverse range of influences, including the masters, vintage relics, and the beauty found in both nature and social commentary. Utilizing unique colored gesso on canvas, I employ the “ground” color as negative space.

What does art mean to you? Why is it important to you?

Art, to me, transcends verbal communication.  Creating art is a form of introspection, a way to navigate the complexities of life. Art holds the power to evoke emotions, challenge perspectives, and foster connections between individuals. Importantly, art is my constant companion on a journey of self-discovery.

What is your creative process? How do you typically approach a new piece of art?

My creative process is a deeply intuitive journey that embraces all facets of myself. Whether dancing in the light or navigating darker moments, I allow every part to show up on the canvas. This process begins with a profound connection to both the external world and the internal moods within me. When approaching a new piece, I immerse myself in nature, contemplating its elements—light, birth, death, color, and moods. This involves exploring the interplay of light and shadow, smells, temperature, and energy.

Inclusion

What inspires your work? What themes consistently appear in your work?

My work draws inspiration from the masters, vintage relics, the beauty of nature, and current-day social commentary. Consistently, my art revolves around celebrating vulnerable humans, animal species, and the delicate balance of our relationship with nature.

When did you first get into art?

I discovered my passion for art unexpectedly after flunking organic chemistry in college. Seeking validation through an “Easy A,” I took an art class and found myself hooked. I delved into the world of art during my studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, exploring painting and metals. The journey continued as I completed my BFA at Pacific Lutheran University in Washington State.

How has your art changed over time?

Over time, my art has evolved into a bold, contemporary expression influenced by religious imagery and the masters. I’ve incorporated aspects of religious iconography and classical realism into my technique, resulting in large-scale paintings known as “Everyday Icons.” These pieces focus on capturing moments of triumph, transition, enlightenment, and serenity.

How do you see your work connecting with audiences?

I believe my work resonates with audiences by offering a visual narrative that speaks to the shared human experience and our interconnectedness with each other and the natural world. Through bold and contemporary expressions, I aim to evoke emotions and prompt reflection. Themes of vulnerability, the celebration of life, and the balance of our relationship with nature serve as universal threads fostering a connection between the viewer and the artwork.

What advice would you have for aspiring artists?

For aspiring artists, I encourage a deep exploration of personal experiences and a commitment to authenticity. Embrace the uniqueness of your perspective and create for the audience of one—your heart. Always remain a student, staying open to continuous learning, and be fearless in your experimentation. Remember, art is simply an extension of yourself.
