Artist Statement

Each of my handbags is created by taking a recycled game board book playbill or record album cover and combining it with new and durable materials. Once I choose the base for a handbag I proceed to create it. I look at the material and decide which way to disassemble and then reassemble it. I decide which style of handbag best suits that particular piece. I choose materials to match it normally using suedes cottons and tapestries. Gussets are cut and sewn and heavy chipboard is covered to add strength to the handbag. The purses are covered to withstand weather either using a heavy laminate decoupage or polyurethane. I add either a button that matches the look of the purse or a basic twist-lock closure. After assembling the purse I decide which handle style best suits it. I either bead a handle to match or I use a strap or plain acrylic or wooden handle. Finally I put finishing touches on the handbag and my artist signature.
