Artist Statement

In my landscape paintings the scenery is always set off by a backlight. The general focus of my painting is always light. The way in which light illuminates and hits and sets the scenery alight determines the way I incorporate color into my painting. My painting technique is layering and blending oil colors on canvas while painting which is why I leave no visible brushstrokes. I found this to be most effective in achieving the subtle balance of colors that comes from combining various layers and colors. In this way colors can coalesce for a more refined cohesive effect as they come together on canvas. I determine the lightest areas where the surroundings receive the most backlight then loosely paint in an atmospheric under painting. Every time I paint over the previous layer I am mixing colors on canvas while painting altering shades and tones in order to draw out the colors that portray the right levels of lightness and darkness in the painting.
