Artist Statement
My work concentrates on the abstract qualities of landscape. I use images from many places I have been as well as creating synthetic environments from memory. This creates a mood in the painting rather than the representation of an actual place. The intent of the space in is to act as a gateway to a much more internal environment contained inside the viewer. Anything and everything can reflect a powerful beauty from smokestacks at sunset to a moody thunderstorm at sea my work always intends to both soothe and provoke. Dark neutral hues of gray brown or blue often dominate the composition emphasizing mood and shadow. These tones dramatically portray the atmospheric character of the landscape. Original acrylic paintings on hardwood panel the painted surface is progressively and slowly built up working from dark to light with thin sometimes transparent layers of paint revealing few brushstrokes. As I paint ideas emerge providing new opportunities and directions for me to explore.
