Artist Statement
I have been carving professionally since graduating college in 1982. I create sculptures out of stone. I carve in alabaster soap stone marble and limestone. I create my work in the old slow way” using hand tools instead of power tools through most of the process. I use an in line air hammer for the carving then switch to hand tools for the smoothing of the surfaces. The stone is then sanded with sandpaper by hand utilizing as many grits as necessary to achieve the desired smoothness. My work ranges in size from tabletop pieces to garden sized sculptures. The dominant themes in my work are the female nude and cats. The cats became a dominant theme in my work when I became “owned” by a pair of them in 1994. I also create abstract pieces that are “explosions of movement” that I hope will carry the viewer”s eye all around the sculpture searching for the beginning and ending of the forms. I hope the viewer enjoys looking at my work as much as I enjoy creating it.”
