Artist Statement
Each pearl is individually designed by first outlining the intended pattern and then applying wax to the outline. The wax pattern is removed and used to cast the pattern in silver or gold. In this process, the biggest challenge is to account for expansion and contraction of both the wax and the metal. This needs special attention so the mounting will fit after casting, otherwise the precious pearl will be scratched. Most mountings have gypsy set sapphires, diamonds or Cz’s. The mountings are rhodium finished and pegged. This process is laborious, but worthwhile – each piece is one-of-a-kind. The rings are also cast (and some pendants) using the lost wax technique. I make a mold of these pieces so I can meet a customer’s need in ring size and desired gems. We (my collaborative artist) and I do not purchase molds! We design and make our jewelry – from designing to finishing.
