These botanical handprints are overprinted with a woodcut plate which is hand carved. Before the overprinting the design is chine colle'd with all sorts of printed and hand made papers cut out to fit the design . The past I use is Nori a Japanese rice paste and the base sheets are 130 lb. BFK paper. The process is arduous and takes a careful amount of registration to make the design elements line up visually. Because of the unique arrangement of the collaged papers each print becomes one of a kind and not editioned. I love the myriad of color and texture choices one finds when gathering archival papers for collage. I also love the universality of the garden as a resource. And finally I find it very satisfying to carve and ink and print the woodcut design thus creating something with a unique beauty sort of like plants in a garden.
