Tell Your Story, Sell More Art

By Amy Amdur / Blog

Tell Your Story and Sell More Art

Recently I was talking with a person who told me her house was filled with art she bought at art festivals. Then she said, she also had a few pieces from a gallery.  She said the difference to her was that when she looked at a piece of art from a festival, she thought of the artist..and it was more meaningful.
So..let’s use that to your advantage.   Tell your story and sell more art.
When a person comes into your booth at a festival, give them a minute to look…then, start your story. The story is a 1-2 minute overview of you and your art. You only have a limited time to connect with the person and get them “hooked.”
During your story, point to your work, show them special features of your work. For those of you who are comfortable, have a “route” planned in your booth that guides them through the three walls, or cases of your booth.
When they start asking questions, go with their interests.
Even if you are asked the same question a hundred times, answer it every time saying “That is a good question…” or similar and give them the answer. How many times have you been asked “How long did it take you to make that?”  Any question from the public is an opportunity to interact. The question may not be the most original, but it is a starting point.
Artists who sell the best, interact and talk to customers.
A sample story for a photographer who shoots outdoor flowers:
“These are all color photographs I take in my garden.  I’ve been photographing since I got my first camera for my 12th birthday.
I see the garden as part of my art; it is my outdoor still life studio. I search my garden for moments that I want to preserve. (Walking to the first point on her planned route) This photograph is from the early spring when the ferns were just starting to unfurl their leaves. I love the geometry of the leaves…it is nature and science at once. (Walking to stop 2) This piece is from mid summer, I call this piece “Summer Blaze” and the intensity of the color of the flowers was amazing. (walking to stop 3) This piece is from early fall and is called “Passages” it shows the passage of time that we all go through.  This piece is 11 x 14, and I can make it in larger sizes if that is better for you.  (Artist takes piece off wall and points out details in the photo..taking piece off the wall helps the person to focus and not be overwhelmed)
Option A: Person asks artist a question, conversation begins.
Option B: Artist gives person their card which has their contact info and a representative image to person and offers person chance to sign guest book with email address for future show appearances.
Figure out your story…and practice it. Tell your story, and watch your sales grow.
