Artist Statement
Joseph Nicphore Nipces 1827 photograph ‘View from the Window at La Gras’ took all day to expose; the sun wrapping the buildings with light on two sides. The light from todays scanner coupled with a dual lens moves across the object. The exposure however is now reduced to minutes and the resulting image captures the aspirations of William Henry Fox Talbots ‘Photogenic Drawings.’ Karl Blossfeldt published ‘Urformen der Kunst’ (Original Forms of Art) in 1928; a collection of botanicals photographed with a large format camera with 30x magnification. I fell in love. Photography is derived from the Greek photos- for light and -graphos for drawing. All images begin as digital scans and are subsequently treated as a scanned negative. Using no additional manipulations beyond traditional treatment of film based images I print on Baryta coated paper with archival pigment inks. I hope you enjoy my modern take on the historical achievements of these pioneers in photography.
