Artist Tip: Artist Statement. What is it & Why is it Important?

By Amdur Productions / Blog, Tips
Artists can earn easy jury points on their art show applications by having a great artist statement!

What is an Artist Statement?
An Artist Statement describes the technique, materials, and processes used in the creation of the entire body of work. In the case of collaborators, the artist statement must describe the collaboration.

Simple Tips to Create a Great Artist Statement

  • Describe the work and how you make it.
  • Keep the statement short and concise. Try to keep the description to 2-4 sentences.
  • Use sentences that support that you are the artist (I paint with acrylics, I sew clothing, etc.).
  • If you have accolades and credentials, put them in the last paragraph as additional information.

Why is the Artist Statement Important?
In the application process, the artist statement supports the work that is shown. It is meant to explain the process of how the work is made. This helps the jurors understand how much goes in to each piece that might not be able to be seen in the jury images.
The artist statement also helps support that the art was made by the person who submits the application.

Great example of an artist statement from Jennifer Lashbrook

“I recycle paint chips to create pixilated artwork of familiar images. When viewed at a distance or through a cell phone, it changes from indiscernible color blocks into clear, recognizable imagery.”

This artist statement is clear, short, and concise. It describes how Jennifer makes the work in a simple way and supports what the jury is seeing in the jury image. Without it, there might be question as to what the juror is seeing and how intricate the work actually is.
