Artist Statement

Be forewarned! I’m going to use the word “vision” an awful lot in the next few sentences. The description of my vision, which is very specific and has been developing for more than 20 years, is inspired by the way photographer Joel Tjinjelaar describes his own vision.

For me, photography is about envisioning a perfect world, as I see it, and capturing that vision in a photographic print. The camera is merely a tool for expressing that vision. When I shoot, I am not interested in capturing an objective reality. I am interested in my creative vision, which is highly personal. The heart of my vision is based on the belief that the further away I deliberately move from reality in my expression, the closer I can get to the soul of my creative spirit and the essence of my vision. The use of black and white tones, the sculpting of light and shadow, and the use of long exposure techniques are some of the steps I take in that pursuit.

Yikes! I count 9 versions of vision. I think I need a new word…
