Artist Statement
For over 25 years, ancient remnants of cultures and languages & iconic images have inspired me to create art fusing Western and Eastern traditional styles of papermaking. I learned to make pure white washi from 7th generation Japanese papermakers. Following that I studied Western paper making. No colored paint is used for the design. I cook fibrous plants in lye & hand beat, These are combined with flax, hemp & cotton rag fibers which I have also beaten. These fibers are then pigmented, primarily with earth pigments. The colored pulps are floated in vats of rainwater and dipped out, layered wet, then pressed as one sheet for flat art or over constructed frameworks for sculptural work. I place my variously colored fibers to create the design for my art. I use museum quality wax as a final completion and sealer on my art.
