Tips from Amy Amdur
Commissioning Art..for the art buyer
- Just like a custom suit tailor- made gives you exactly what you are looking for, commissioning art delivers a unique piece of art made for you, to your exact needs.
- Love an artist but the work isn’t the right size? Ask if the artist accepts commissions.
- Love an artist but the colors aren’t quite what you want? Ask if the artist will accept commissions
- Love an artist but the subject matter isn’t what you are looking for? Ask if the artist will accept commissions.

The fun begins here
Typically an artist will ask for the size you need/want. The art buyer can request colors and subject matter. Some artists are more flexible than others and want to stay true to their art, while others see a commission piece as a challenge.
Payment is usually ½ down to start, and the balance due upon delivery.
REMEMBER ORIGINAL ART TAKES TIME. ANYWHERE FROM WEEKS TO MONTHS WOULD BE TYPICAL.

Taking Art Commissions..for the artist
While many artists try to fit as much art as possible into their booth, invariably there will be the art buyer who loves “it” but wants it in a different size, orientation, color or similar.
Good reasons to take commissions include:
Additional income generated from a show- Artistic challenge, pushing you to do something you wouldn’t typically do
- Possibility of doing large scale work that is great for your portfolio
Tips:
- Be very clear if the art buyer gets to have a round of edits or not
- Be very clear of the time it will take for you to make the art.
- Be very clever about the payment plan you will use.
Good luck and happy art making!
